Cool Something just aint right yeah!

Hi guys,

I have my dedicated server "running". I can join my server on the local LAN, and i can pick it up on the master servers list in ut2k4.

Whenever people try to join my game, it just doesnt work. I have opened ports on my router as per all suggestions, and i have opened all ports through windows firewall. I also checked the forum to make sure nobody had posted about this problem, and i found something, but there were no replies!

My Specs :
Alienware 3.2 Laptop, WinXP Pro, 1GB RAM, adsl connection. My connection uses dynamic addressing so i use dns hostname to keep it on the right track.
My adsl uses PPoE over Ethernet to negotiate all its crap.

It SEEMS like a routing problem, but no matter what i try it doesnt work, are there ANY suggestions regarding this. I have been trying for the last 5 days, to no avail.

My friends who try connect just get a black screen of death. Aka BSOD, yes i have even named it ive tried so many times

Sweet, look forward to replies.

Windows firewall on your server machine, right? Have you tried turning it off temporarily for testing?

Also, you can use the Windows firewall as a troubleshooting tool. Turn it on and set it to log dropped packets and successful connections to a file. From the file you'll be able to see if your router is in fact forwarding specific port traffic from the Internet to your server machine and if the Windows firewall blocked it.

Looks likes your server is receiving queries on port 9778/udp. The query port is the game port + 1 so you must have your game port set to 9777/udp, right? In your logfile sniplet there was no traffic logged on 9777/udp so either no one tried to join during that time frame or your router is not forwarding port 9777/udp which would cause your BSOD problem.

Default ok

ok i had the same problem... and this is kind of ghetto i dont know any big programs that are going to find your real ip for you, your router masks your ip, mine makes it seem like my ip is 192.168.1.XXX but this is not the case,
http://www.ventrilo.com/myip.php to see your real IP address, when you do this give your friend this number, so it will be like XX.XXX.XX.XX:7777 i hope this helps if not then oh well i tried my best at being computer savvy

Default The answer eludes us

I too am having the same problem...and I have been doing this stuff for 10 years as a job. And my details match yours. I have AllTel aDSL using PPoE, but I use a Linksys router. I have been doing research on various forums and the only replies are from people who don't truly understand the problem as they suggest the obvious things that people have already tried.

I have opened the ports 7777,7778,7787,7788 and told the linksys to forward those ports to my server. I have configured my dedicated server. From my lan or from the server itself (using address 127.0.0.1 loopback), I can connect to the dedicated server and run it just fine. My server even registers with the master servers on the web so that I show up on the lists. Still when I try to connect to my computer through the web from my house, a neighbors house, or from a friend's house, we just cannot connect. We either get a BSOD or the BSOD with the URL to my server in big white letters on the screen. Attached is a snipit of the log from my server instance.

Log: Resolving ut2004master1.epicgames.com...
Log: MasterServerUplink: Resolved ut2004master1.epicgames.com as 207.135.145.6.
Log: MasterServerUplink: Connection to ut2004master1.epicgames.com established.
Log: Approval APPROVED
Log: Master server requests heartbeat 0 with code 16236
Log: Master server requests heartbeat 1 with code 16236
Log: Master server requests heartbeat 2 with code 16236
Log: Master server assigned our MatchID: 0

Next I download EtherDetect which is an easy shareware packet sniffer. I used this to monitor connections coming into my ethernet card from the router. I saw various connection attempts from hundreds of addresses on the web to port(s) 7777,7778, and 7787; which are all UT2K4 ports. I could see that my server was trying to respond to these negotiation attempts as well. I could also see my servers regular communications with the master servers, however, no one has ever joined my server. It's as if my return packets to the join negotiation attempt never made it back to the player trying to join. There are several options that I have nearly exhausted with my linksys, but they may work for your Netgear.

1. Totally disable your windows firewall. Once things are working, you can go turn it back on.
2. Configure your netgear to set your server as a DMZ machine (if the netgear supports this). Once you get things working, you may want to revert back to port-forwarding to close up all those unnecessary ports.
3. If you are using DHCP, turn it off, and hardcode those IP addresses as many of the smaller broadband routers automatically disable port-forwarding or DMZ configurations if DHCP is enabled. This is done because with DHCP, your computers are not guaranteed to get the same IP address every time.
4. If your router has some Advanced Firewall Protection features, turn it off, in particular, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) as this feature inspects packets for suspicious traffic patterns and may intentionally block packets.
5. Check to see if your router is configured as a Router or a Gateway. These are different in how they place IP addresses in the IP header. This can make a difference to certain pieces of software. It's hard to determine which hardware is susceptable without testing....not sure about UT2K4.
6. Have you flashed your router firmware to the latest or a somewhat current version. This may give you more options. But make sure to have a backup of your previous version prior to any firmware upgrades as some of these upgrades do more damage than good, depending on your implementation.

Well good luck. I'll continue to check the forums for more information.

Default Eeep!

Hiya and thanks for all your efforts. I dont however have a netgear router, its a standard telkom marconi router which comes from my ISP, nothing too advanced...

I am not even sure what DMZ means, i will google it though, and try what you suggest anyway, as a router is a router, and there is a good chance it may still work.

ill post up what results i get
