S3TC Textures for UT99 Complete Guide
Hello all players & admins !
After the 7 years of Unreal Tournament, you are now finally able to use and run S3TC High Resolution textures even in online games. I wasn't even hoping i would make such a post like this, but woala! here we go. After the great cooperation with the guy i've found on Unrealadmin forums - Hermskii, i'm proud to introduce the article:
S3TC Textures for UT99 Complete Guide
I have to say THIS REALLY WORKS and it is tested so far on 3 PCs with diferent UT configurations, working perfect with NO BUGS, "sliding" players or any other unwanted behaviour. Now you can enjoy the full power of S3TC Textures!

After reading your guide I notcied at the bottom:
Quote:
I take no credit for his driver and if I knew who actually created the s3fix.exe file that this readme is attached to I would update this file to reflect that person's name so that they got their just due credit. Nice work by all entities for the driver and the fix!
|
Does this mean the original fix from years ago is still being used?

Well, actually i'm not sure about this one, i've seen 2 versions of this fix so far, the original - old one, and then the updated version of the fix. I'd guess this is the newer one. But important is, this works pretty nice. So, for instance, using the S3TC in UT movie in some decent quality could be very nice imo.

Same
It is the same fix from back then. The instruction set simply explains what in addition to using the fix needs to be done for it to work.

It's just a custom installer that OO7Mike did which adds the enhanced OpenGL renderer (an old version) and maxed out settings in the ini. I know because I'm hosting the page .

I'm glad [TI]Al it worked for you. Please tell me if you installed S3TC by S3TC Texture Guide here http://gla.soth.sk/?pg=s3tc and if so, was the guide clear to understand and follow ?
Thanks !

I followed the one in the link I posted. I originally got it from a post by Hermskii on BU.

Ye, nice. I stopped using S3TC textures as AnthChecker came out and kicked my (due to s3fix.exe and stuff), but was too lazy to figure out myself how to get around.
Nice guide, you two, works pretty fine.

Thanks
Thanks all. Iworked long and hard making the guide and once I finished it I reinstalled UT and tested it again myself making sure that it would work for everyone else. I did it in my spare time over several days and after I collected lots and lots of information about the textures and the fix from old threads all over the internet.
I finally sat down one day and started documenting my efforts and making notes of what worked and didn't so the next attempt could be modified until I finally got it to work, People have complained for years about S3TC textures not working and I was one of them.
It was my pleasure to put this together and Jackal asked me a few days after trying it and finally having success if he could post it on his website. I said sure. I was unaware that he was going to slightly alter my directions so I can't confirm yet whether his set will work though they are based strictly from mine but if they do then people need to have access to them so they can use the textures without having issues.
I too am cleaning up my set of directions and when complete, I will test them again and again then replace the download link in the first post with them. Later and please don't forget to post your results here whether they work for you or not so others will know. Later!

Ok, I've encountered a problem now. On some servers (mostly fast-gameservers.de) you just can't move when using S3TC. You can shoot, but you're simply stuck.
Somewhere in your guide, I read about misconfigured servers where you can't use S3TC, so, well, it was just a matter of time until I found one where it doesn't work ...
I guess there's no client-sided way around this - except turning s3tc off.

And when you say something it appears as white text in the console ? It took me a while to figure out it was something to with s3tc.
