Default New Server questions

Hi everyone!

So I missed UT99 so much, I decided to start my own 1/2 Excessive Overkill... my favorite mod. Actually, I'm trying to restart a community like I had running back in 2006, when my friend and I put together www.unreal-unlimited.com... I really miss those people, they were awesome players with great attitudes.

Anyway, I'm asking two things here: First, would some people outside my network mind testing it so that I can make sure everything is set up correctly and running right?

Secondly, with the EO mutator, once a player joins and the map starts, it produces lots of lag on the server...and after checking the logs, I see there's lots of entries with errors that only show up when the EO mutator is active. On the changelog, the version I'm using says that the "Accessed None" errors shown in this log excerpt were fixed, but I still get them... so I was hoping I could get some insight as I don't really know anything about UnrealScript. Here's part of my log with the errors and my server's .ini file (The errors come up so fast I can't get the beginning of the log, so I have to paste two different parts):

And here is the server .ini... I discovered the errors after installing UTPure, so I have commented those out until I get the errors fixed. There were no previous errors before adding Excessive Overkill; I'm adding mutators one at a time.

Did the mod, EO, spit out those errors before? If not, then UTPure have some coding disagreement with EO (and something would not able to function well according to the accessed none(s)). You could go with ACE if you want anti-cheat protection, but that's up to you.

I wonder if you have used UTPure with EO in the past, if it didn't give much error as before, what version would it be?


Edit:--Nvm just read what you did mention above . Ok so, are you wanting to use UTPure for anti-cheat or willing to try another anti-cheat to prevent those accessed none? Or what are you looking for?

I'm willing to pretty much use anything anti-cheat, as long as it works well, cuz I hate lame tactics, and one of those is cheating. *L* And as long as it works without any crazy config stuff for clients of all OSs... being a linux user, it was hard enough just to get UT installed.

Just out of curiosity, though, if the UTPure is commented out anyway, it's not loading it, right? Do you think it's responsible for those errors? Should I take the UTPure mutator files out of the System folder and see what happens?

If you're a linux user, you might have some problem with ACE (Anti cheat engine) but I was thinking of ACE because it could not have any of the errors mentioned above. & some protection of anti-cheat.

However, ACE can be configurable for linux users. I haven't dig into linux platform much to find out what's going on. Some other can share their experience if they happen to stop by.

I think we may be jumping ahead...I'm going to try it without the UTPure files there and see if the errors come up.

Ok, I went through some testing, doing one mutator at a time and watching for errors. My kids didn't mind helping me though. *LOL*

So I don't get any errors with the Excessive CTF gametype...
Using regular CTF as the gametype, I get errors with the sniper upgrade and enforcer upgrades, but the errors are referencing the minigun, so I really don't get that.

Going to do more research and see what I come up with.

Oh and by the way, that testing was with the utpure removed from the server's .ini file, and the actual files deleted from the system directory.

Well I didn't say ACE will fix those errors because ACE don't do much changes as UTPure does (code wise). The thing is, ACE won't make those errors (as I haven't seen any errors much from ACE). So it's like undoing it. But without UTPure.

The log messages may be causing lag because they require a lot of disk-writes. You can try hiding the log messages by adding these lines to the Core.System section of your UnrealTournament.ini:

Chamberly, please forgive me if I'm missing what you're trying to tell me... but if I'm reading you right, I'm not sure how ACE would be undoing anything that UTPure is doing, because UTPure isn't even on there at all. The only things I have on the server are the MapVoteLA13, ServerAdds, and Excessive Overkill (which I just upgraded to 1.4pa last night, and errors happen MUCH less, though they do still happen).
Maybe I'm just not understanding you?

nogginBasher, Yes I have noticed lots of disk writes, and suppressing them from the log never occurred to me, nice idea! I'll try that this evening! If I do just suppress the logs, however, it won't do anything bad to the server itself (like causing it to crash) will it?

You miss my point... somehow you are confusing yourself with ACE and UTPure according to those errors. I'll try to explain... ACE & UTPure works in different code to catch cheat. ACE doesn't tweak anything, UTPure does (as what I heard) and it changes a few things in the server.

So with ACE, it doesn't make those accessed none appear. UTPure modified something with EO and the accessed none appear... as whatever it was doing to fight over something and something wouldn't work? Thing is, ACE doesn't do everything what UTPure does.

If I'm not clear enough... I give up.

If the errors still happen, it may be from the EO game itself?

Yes, I already mentioned that the errors are coming from EO itself, without UTPure or anything else on the server, in the .ini file OR in the System directory...

So now you understand why it didn't make any sense.

Well, to eliminate that, I don't know what is the policy for editing EO files or what, but if it's open source, can find out what's doing it and then turn it off or so. If not, then build a mod that detect that problem and turn it off so it doesn't spam the log.

I had made a server side mod (with help) to stop the drip spam without modifying the original file, it help. so if it give any idea to help out.

Ok so back to square one... it's definitely in the EO mutator, nothing else affects it...

And I'm willing to learn some unrealscript, but are there any experts around that might be able to point me in the general direction of where to begin looking?

Not sure of the best way to explain it, but... if an actor variable is not initiated or set to some object, and you try to reference it you get the 'Accessed None' error. Furthermore, if you then try to edit or reference a property of that actor then you get the "Attempt to assigned variable through None".

So in your examples:

For minigun2, the function where the error occurred is the 2nd to last part of the (..) part in the log:

(Function Engine.Weapon.GiveAmmo:0099)

So in that case it was something in the GiveAmmo() function. That doesn't necessarily mean the bug is in that part - it is likely a call to it from somewhere in EO that isn't checking that all actors are initiated first.

That helps tremendously!! Thanks for giving me a direction to look in... I know the errors only occur when EO mutator is present and active (all others without EO won't produce the error, and EO with none others present give same result as above), so I think it has to be somewhere in the EO mutator itself...and will look for things calling those functions.

Thank you so much for your time! I'll keep you updated, although I might not have time to work on it until this weekend... and probably won't get very far as I'll need to learn the basics of UnrealScript so I can have an idea of what's going on when I look at it. But I very much appreciate your help!
