Unhappy UTDC is crashing my Unreal Tournament

Hello, I've played UT before without any problems whatsoever. Nowadays I can't join UTDC servers because my UT crashes and I don't know what to do, I've been googling around and nothing have helped me. I'm running Ubuntu and I'm playing UT GOTY (retail CD) version of the game (436) using wine.

This is what pops up in UnrealTournament.log:

And it ends up crashing with the classic Unreal Tournament crash message and mentions the "Critical" sections of the log. This has never happened before when (I used to play one year ago, and many years before that) and I've read that many others have these kinds of problems with UTDC.

How do I fix this? I've tried deleting cache, deleting the UTDC dlls (and other not native content), reinstalling both wine and UT twice, changing video mode but nothing helps. I even tried to grab the dlls from your website but it didn't change anything.

There is nothing players can do about that. It's not the game itself that is crashing, or the OS, or the server, it's something obscure that happens in UTDC that somehow causes some players to be unable to join some servers no matter how many trillion times they try to reinstall / upgrade this / upgrade that / change this / disable that.

I think UTDC needs a permanent test server with a virtual machine to emulate trillions of possible clients.

Even if there was no one has the source of UTDC so no one can fix it.

I thought with Ubuntu being a Linux distribution you should not be checked by UTDC at all...anyway I've seen a lot of VISTA users crashing when using D3D and they could fix it by switching to D3D8 or D3D9.

Maybe it's worth a try here as well.

He's using wine to run UT, which is probably causing his UTDC crash. He needs to use the Linux version of UT.

The Linux version of Unreal Tournament is IMPOSSIBLE to use on any modern system due to it not being maintained correctly. Running UT through WINE is the ONLY way it'll work properly on Linux. Believe me I tried. I believe it is possible to get UTDC to work properly if you can fetch a few dlls though.

The fact that you failed to make it work, does not prove that it is not possible to make it work. "Believe me I tried" is a horribly arrogant statement.

Have YOU gotten it to run properly? I myself almost got it working, however it doesn't like modern hardware and it requires some old-ass libs and other crap like that. I tried setting my CPU frequency and using a different OpenGL renderer, but that didn't work. I'd like to see you get this to run on a 64 bit quad core processor. So far I found the best way to get UT to run on Linux was to install the Windows version through WINE, switch out the OpenGL renderer, install the dual core fix off of ut-files, and put kernel 32.dll in your system32 folder. Even after doing that though I'm still having problems (|uK|Shiva you should be able to find me in your logs for your one night stand server) jumping into a UTDC server.

He is famous for that kind of stupidity. He was telling people on another forum that they don't need more than 25hz refresh ........ and that open gl doesn't work either.....

And you'll probably never get it to work because it's not a true windows environment. I fought to get UT99 to work in wine simply because I couldn't use Teamspeak and play UT99 at the same time due to the soundcard priority bit. Either one program or the other could use the sound card through ALSA but not both at the same time. In wine, I was able to get the desired effect with my sound but UTDC wouldn't let me in. Fought with it for the better part of a week trying about a million different things. No luck.

Then I switched from ALSA to OSS and that fixed the sound issues. I found the correct way to install UT99 in Ubuntu. The game played like butter with only a few tweaks to Linux itself. If you could spend the time to get it running smooth in Linux, UTDC no longer is an issue because you won't be checked unless you stumble across a cruel admin that hates Linux and Mac.

If you can figure it out I think it's possible to use the extremely buggy Pulse Audio (which actually isn't a bad piece of software, it's just implemented wrong) sound server to get your sound corrected. Also how did you get Linux UT to run correctly? I tried and tried, but even after I got it to play I still had the CPU problem and for some reason setting frequency with a command line would stop the game from launching. Another thing: Protos was kicked from UT99.org a while ago after he went in trolling and pissing everybody off. I don't know what his problem is/was but it's kind of weird that somebody who helped make a lot of corrections on the UTRP guide a while back would do that especially since I never had a problem with him before that. And about that whole use Direct 3D 8 and 9 over OpenGL thing: I was using a Geforce 6200 PCI and an ATI HD 2600 AGP (which quickly found it's way to the bottom of my trash can) at the time of making that guide and before that I was using a Riva TNT and before that an ATI Rage. All of those cards sucked at OpenGL. I almost forgot to add that the best way to use TeamSpeak on Linux is DON'T: Install the Windows version in WINE and do it that way. The Linux version isn't as good as the Windows one and WINE can handle the Windows one flawlessly.

Anyway back on topic: UTDC is crashing UT
How do we solve this? Use the Linux version.
How do we do get it to run correctly on modern hardware? I'll take another shot at it and report back the results. Hopefully this will prevent a lot of headaches if and when me or somebody else on here figures these problems out.

I'm researching right now. UT99 has a problem running on a quadcore in a Windows system because the OS doesn't know how to handle balancing the load between cores. Linux has the same issue although it is known to handle it much better. I'm working on it.

Tell us your hardware like CPU, RAM, vidcard and such. Give me a better idea of what you have so that we both can work towards a common goal. With 2 brains, we stand a much better chance to beat it.

Considering that an Intel Pentium 3 was considered OVERKILL for this game this is going to be a pain in the ass.

The PC I'm using which replaced my old 478 socket Pentium 4 system that blew up is running Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit on: a 3GHz AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition, 4 GB 1066MHz GSkill DDR2, and a 256 bit NVIDIA 9800 GTX with 1GB of video memory. I haven't had the chance to try it again yet, because I had to work a ten hour shift.

Here is what I have so far. You definitely have to fire it up on one core. I'm working on getting schedutils to start the game on one core. Here are some screenshots with the default driver and no tweaks on a quadcore machine. As long as you are not running SLI mode with multiple GPU's, your vid card will be fine.

Note the fps with settings cranked to max. I could probably get better performance using the opengl driver. I'll try more tomorrow but I think I'm on to a cure. Why don't you try researching the schedutils? You'll wanna set it up to where it forces the game to a single core. It comes preloaded in ubuntu libs so you won't need to apt-get anything. If you have TS, drop by my TS tomorrow at 173.45.101.86. We'll hammer away at it a little. Have good one.

I gotta work in an hour and do the 5pm to 3 am thing again. So far the only thing I've gotten done is finding out that I'm missing libgtk-1.2.so.0. The only one of those I can find is in RPM form which means I'll need to take Alien to it.

Got it installed, but it won't even start up. I'm guessing it hates my system. It installed without errors in like 30 seconds after I backed up the CDs and mounted the isos, but the damn thing won't start up.

If you have the GOTY disks, just follow these directions. If it did install fine for you already, you will need to open a terminal and chmod 755 both the ut and ucc files. It helps to chown the entire directory to your account.

Sorry. I've been swamped the past couple of days. I forgot to put
the link in the last post. This post explains why UT99goty won't install
directly on to Ubuntu using the official update and how to fix it. I
also extracted the binaries from the update so you can just add them to your
favorite install without having to jump through hoops but going that route
takes some tweaking to make it work. Have a good one.
