Today I received a message I have been dreading for a long time.

Some of you know, but many may not. Dane is very sick and today I got a goodbye letter from him. He has entered a sort of hospice care, someplace where he can rest and enjoy his last days in comfort.

Many (including myself) have had wars of words with Dane but he *is* one of us, and shall always be. I would ask that you think good thoughts for him as well as his family. I have had the occasion to webcam with Dane and his wife, and always you could hear his young boys playing in the background. Think of them and join me in hoping that this transition is as painless as can be.

I wish you the very best Dane. We will meet again my friend, I promise you that.

Sad to hear this

The Dane is a very colorful person in the ut-community.
I don't know him personally but I've read alot of posts written by him and enjoyed his maps and other useful tools for UT.
I wish him and his family strength and lot's of love.

This explains that. Sometimes people that are in pain or ill health come accross as just being cranky when they're simply dealing the best they can with their condition. Please transmit our best wishes to him and his family.

TheDane did a lot of good work that he shared with the community. I also wish you the best and thanks for all.

hopefully through some miracle he can be healed? This soundz Terminal.. Huntington's?, Parkinson's , Cancer?..

Agreed top bloke over all and contributed alot to the community best wishes also from me and my family bro.

times like this is when UT's Priorities move way down the scale and more important things (family, close friends & Relationships) matter most.

if not terminal , then stress related UT related?... Give it up for a few weeks / months and try bike riding or something.

Honestly I am not sure exactly what is wrong. I know he had lost his sister last year and his mother shortly before that. He had mentioned "bad genes" a couple of times. Dane is quite a private person so I can only speculate as to the true nature of his problems. I do know he has been fighting (strenuously) for quite a while so I hope that you consider that when you think back on his postings. I often wondered if the arguing was simply a release for him, something to help his mind be occupied. This was pretty evident in his coding spree of the last year or so, his output has been prolific and I could tell he was trying to finish things. I knew the clock was ticking but I didn't think it that close.

As is often the case, a person's true nature is not at all what it seems to be on a forum. I found Dane to be warm and gracious every time we visited and he certainly loves his family. Bad news certainly doesn't wash away past transgressions but thank you for leaving these kind words for his sons to find someday.

It is always shocking and sad news to hear.

I hope his time left will be a time as comfort and pleasant possible.
I wish his family and friends all the strength needed these days and those still to come.

Talked to him in MSN and new he had this condition but i did not know it had gone this far....I had hoped that God or the doctors could help him somehow in some way ,To give him some more time, You always hope...
I am not a man of god but sending him and his family a pray and thinking about you Jacob...love from Hitman and Spacegirl .

This is indeed sad news to here. I didnt know him but I knew he was highly respected in the community. If you read this Jacob, please know you are thought of.. by friends, UT Friends and people who know your work.
