UT runs far better on windows than it does linux.

The best OS for UT is NT, you can use 2000 if you got ti but make sure you are running the updated .dll to stop the creeping ping bug

I admin a clan server and tryed both Linux (Mandrake 8.2) and Windows (Win2K-SP2+IpDrv). I dont really find much difference in performance using one or other SO.

The advantage of windows is the bunch of tools available for admin and the fact UT was designed for it. Users can use fancy nicknames.

With Linux is a little bit harder to admin but it makes possible to log in the server anytime you need to chage anything (I find remote admin very useful). Users cannot use fancy nicknames (this is a well known Linux bug).

I Only expect one big advantage from a Linux server: the superior virtual memory management. I guess Linux is able to run the whole server from RAM (when you have enough ) I'm not sure of this fact, need some test.

About the creeping ping bug. Im not sure how to check it out.

Extra info:
P3 866@912 MHz
256 MB RAM
iCTF dedicated server.
MaxPlayers = 10
MaxNetSpeed = 10000
TickRate = 40

Thats right, Bry.

I dont have any real complaint about the windows server. To be honest, the choice of the OS is nearly a matter of taste. I decided to use Linux because I do at home as well. I'm a newcomer in Linux's world, so I'm just playing around. Who doesnt?

Has anyone given XP Pro a good run as a server?
If so, what issues is there with it, compared to say NT?

Well, i have XP and so far i didn't have any problems with the server.
Iv'e tested this on lan and a few online games, but no prob's

I must say that it was a normal server, no advanced settings and such, just standart.

I run XP too.
The thing about XP is that it is optimized to run broadband. You cant get the same internet speeds through to other windows OS's.

I havent tried Linux for anything since Mandrake 1.1, so I cant say anything about Linux, cept its very stable, very fast, and also great for networking.

linux pwns
actually.. i really like it beacuse its EASIER for me to remote admin
because the only access i have to the box is a telnet session. (Its roughly a 6-7 hour flight away)
i can do absoultly anything to the server remotely with telnet combined with ftp.

have had a few problems with the process dieing after a month or so of solid usage.

Also.. its very good for scripting things.
(such as archiving logs, or if the server crashes unexpectedly taking the last 40 lines of the log compressing them and emailing me and then restarting the server)
