I admin a clan server and tryed both Linux (Mandrake 8.2) and Windows (Win2K-SP2+IpDrv). I dont really find much difference in performance using one or other SO.
The advantage of windows is the bunch of tools available for admin and the fact UT was designed for it. Users can use fancy nicknames.
With Linux is a little bit harder to admin but it makes possible to log in the server anytime you need to chage anything (I find remote admin very useful). Users cannot use fancy nicknames (this is a well known Linux bug).
I Only expect one big advantage from a Linux server: the superior virtual memory management. I guess Linux is able to run the whole server from RAM (when you have enough
) I'm not sure of this fact, need some test.
About the creeping ping bug. Im not sure how to check it out.
